Cities are the focal points of commerce, innovation, and communities, and while they only cover roughly 3-4% of the world’s surface, they produce 75% of global GDP and contribute to over more than 70% of global carbon emissions. As the race to net-zero intensifies, it’s clear that urban areas have a crucial role to play in the delivery and implementation of a decarbonised world. In the words of the World Economic Forum - ‘’Cities are at the heart of our journey to net-zero.’’ A greener and smarter city not only encourages a more sustainable way of living but promotes access and opportunity to companies who align with its environmental targets and values.
The fourth FT Race to Net-Zero forum explored how the development of urban areas can shine a light on what a successful decarbonisation strategy looks like. Policymakers, investors and key industry stakeholders explored the steps needed to set a sustainable path for future cities in the global fight against climate change.
